UnderCon – Perfect WordPress Pre-Launch Page

March 19th, 2010

UnderCon Screenshot

Are you working on launching or maybe even re-launching a WordPress powered web site?  If so, you might want to slap up a quick “under construction page” to keep people happy until the final version of the web site is ready.  UnderCon, a great theme for WordPress will help you do that with style.

The idea here is very simple. It is just a default page to look at before a real web site is ready.  That does not mean though that you can not customize it.  You can.

Some of the features include:

  • Customizable title, description and logo under theme option page.
  • Use Feedburner for email subscription and delivery.
  • Free. Released in GPL license.

Want to give it a shot?  Go download the UnderCon theme over at ShoppingThemes.com or try the live demo

Double Save Your Work to a USB Drive

March 19th, 2010

Fast, Simple and Easy Backup

Nothing kills your will to live faster than losing a lot of work you have been spending hours upon hours creating it.  Not that I am bitter about my own paste experiences or anything.  With that thought in mind though, I thought it might be a good time to introduce you to Back4Sure

Here is a little more about the program from the developers:

Back4Sure is a freeware program for making backup copies of your documents, pictures, music, videos and anything you find valuable. The files to copy may be distributed all over your computer, even on different drives. Back4Sure will gather all the files you’ve selected for backup and make a copy of them into a specified target directory. The folder with the drive drive letter of the source drive and the directory structure will be automatically created in the target directory, so all your files will be stored correctly and easy to find. In this process, Back4Sure will only copy files that have changed since the last backup, so even a large number of files is backed up as fast as possible.

This is one of the best freeware backup utilities I know of.  You have the choice of using a USB flash drive, a second hard drive or a network share as a backup target.  With the program’s built in compression techniques you can squeeze your backups down to make them fit – so they are not wasting space.

Occupying less than 1 MB of storage space, it can also be run from a USB portable flash drive very easily too.  You can go pick up Back4Sure at it’s official site to make lost work a think of the past.

Add a Second E-mail to Account Records

March 17th, 2010

This is something I would encourage everyone to do, as it is a very important means of communication for us to have on record.  Please take a few minutes of your day to give us a secondary e-mail account we can reach you at.  This way, we have one more way to get in contact with you in case of an emergency situation.

How to Add Your Secondary E-mail Address

image The first step you need to take is to login to the Customer Account Page with your hosting account user name and password.

Next, click on Billing/Contact Information.

The third step would be to provide your alternative e-mail address, update your primary e-mail address or both.  You can do this for your billing information on record and your contact information on record.

image

After you are done editing your billing information, click the button that says, “Save Billing Information”.  If you are also updating your contact information, be sure to hit the button that says, “Save Contact Information” once you have completed updating that as well.

Also, it is worth pointing out that either e-mail account we have on record for your account, the primary e-mail account or the secondary one, should never be associated with one of your domains you are hosting or have registered with us. Please use a different e-mail provider, such as your ISP, or you could use one from a place like Yahoo! Mail or Gmail.

Why Update? Other than your phone number, your primary and secondary e-mail addresses are what we have on record to contact you at if something goes wrong with your hosting account.  The reason we do not want you to put an e-mail address there that we host, is because what if the account associated with the e-mail account was having trouble?  We would be without a way to reach you via e-mail and this would slow down our support process.

So add an alternative e-mail to your account records today, and update your primary e-mail address if needed.  Better to do it now, rather than chance not getting notified just in case the worst might happen.

Fun “Guess What I’m Drawing” Game

March 16th, 2010

Fun Drawing Game

Looking for a fun way to spend a few extra minutes of your day?  If you are looking for an escape from your Monday morning blues – give Gartic a try.  This web-based drawing game is a lot of fun.

The idea here is to join a room, and then have everybody take turns guessing what one person is trying to draw.  Each round a word is given to a player and that player must draw it, the best they can.  When the word is guessed, both the guessing playing and the player that is drawing the image gets points.

Think of it as playing Pictionary on the Web with a bunch of strangers.  Go give it a shot, at http://www.gartic.net/.

5 Most Popular .htaccess Tips and Tricks

March 9th, 2010

5 Ways to Master the .htacess File

There are tons of things you can do from the .htaccess file inside of your web hosting account.  From redirecting the users to controlling who can get in and who can get out, it is a very useful file to have on your hosting account.  To help out the new web hosting clients and to act as a reminder to the old pros around here, I thought I would go through five of the most popular .htaccess tips I know.

Redirect to a Maintenance Page

This is a great one to use if you need to make some quick web page edits, and you don’t want the public to see you edit your web site, while it is still live.

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/offline.html$
RewriteRule .* /offline.html [R=307,L]

This will redirect anybody who checks out any web page on your web site to the "offline.html" file.

Force the Use of “www” in Front of a Domain Name

If you want to keep the www in front of your domain name, no matter how somebody types it in, here is the ‘bit of .htaccess magic you will need:

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
rewritecond %{http_host} ^mydomain.com [nc]
rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.mydomain.com/$1 [r=301,nc]

Once you have done so, both mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com will both send you to www.mydomain.com

Remove the “www” From in Front of a Domain Name

You can also force your domain to drop the www from the address when typed in, if you would rather have it the other way around. In that situation, you would need to add this to your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.mydomain.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://mydomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

This will make both mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com send you to just mydomain.com.

Manually Create Custom Error Pages

Ever check out some of those customized error pages and wonder how it could be done? Just use these snippets of .htaccess code to tell people where to look for your error pages.

   ErrorDocument 400 /errors/400.html
   ErrorDocument 401 /errors/401.html
   ErrorDocument 403 /errors/403.html
   ErrorDocument 404 /errors/404.html
   ErrorDocument 500 /errors/500.html

This tells the server to look inside the “errors” folder and that specific page for each of the different error types. That is not all of the error codes, but they are the ones that will be ‘hit by your users 99 percent of the time.

Block Visitor By IP Address

Need to keep somebody from checking out your web site?  This next tip will give you the ability to deny somebody based on what their IP address is:

order allow,deny
deny from 123.45.6.7
deny from 012.34.5.
allow from all

The above blocks access to the site from 123.45.6.7, and from any sub-domain under the IP block 012.34.5. (012.34.5.1, 012.34.5.2, 012.34.5.3, etc).

That is it for this round up of tips.  For more help with the .htaccess file, and many more things you can do with your web hosting account, be sure to check out the Lunarpages Web Hosting Wiki.

Easy Plugin Management with WordPress

March 3rd, 2010

How to Install WordPress Plugins

Installing plugins within WordPress itself, rather than downloading them and re-uploading them to your hosting space manually has been around for some time now.  However, I don’t think many people have discovered this great feature that WordPress has to offer.  Let me guide you through installing a plugin using WordPress on your blog hosted here at Lunarpages.

Step one would be to login to your WordPress powered blog’s administrator section, usually located at:

http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/

Next, you want to click on the Plugins menu in the sidebar.  Once you are on the Manage Plugins page, check in the sidebar under Plugins for a link that says, “Add New”.  Click that link.

Add New WordPress Plugins!

This will take you to the Install Plugins web page.  YOu have several options to choose from here.  The two most noticeable ones are the search box and the popular tags.  Here you can find the plugin you are looking for.

Plugin Page Inside of WordPress

Now, just search for the plugin type you need.  I typed in, “images” and got this screen returned to me:

Search Results for Plugins

There you have plenty of image related plugins to choose from.  Now if you select featured, popular, newest or recently updated – you will be taken to another plugin list that shows that type of plugin.  To install a plugin, just hit the, “Install” link under the action column that lines up with that specific plugin.

WordPress Plugin Install Page

A new window will pop up giving you a description of the plugin, and the ability to install that plugin by hitting the button labeled, “Install Now”.  No need for FTP clients, downloading and re-uploading.  WordPress takes care of it all.  When your done installing, you can then turn around and activate, tweak and configure the plugin you have just installed.
